Reporting damage helps state and local officials document the extent of the disaster and determine whether additional recovery assistance may become available.

Important: Reporting damage is not an application for financial assistance and does not guarantee assistance.

If it is safe to do so, photograph or video the damage before cleanup begins. Keep receipts for cleanup and repairs, along with insurance correspondence and repair estimates.

Important: Reporting damage through Indiana 211 or applying for Indiana State Disaster Relief Fund assistance does not automatically register you for FEMA assistance. A separate FEMA application is required.

Madison County has been approved for FEMA Individual Assistance following the severe storms, tornadoes, straight-line winds and flooding beginning August 11, 2026.

FEMA Individual Assistance may provide financial assistance and other services to eligible individuals and households with disaster-related needs and expenses that are uninsured or underinsured.

If you have insurance, FEMA recommends filing a claim with your insurance company as soon as possible. FEMA cannot provide assistance for losses already covered by insurance.

Madison County flood survivors can receive in-person recovery assistance at a multi-agency One Stop Shop beginning Wednesday, September 2. More than 20 agencies, including FEMA, state and county representatives, will be available to answer questions and help homeowners, renters and businesses access and apply for disaster assistance.

Applicants are encouraged to bring their Social Security number, insurance information, information about disaster damage, financial and contact information, and home ownership documents. If some of this information is unavailable, residents may still begin the application process.

The American Red Cross is offering financial assistance to households with qualifying major damage from the August storms and flooding. To be eligible, the damaged home must have been the household’s primary residence in a confirmed disaster-impacted area, the head of household must provide proof of identity and residence, and the home must have been destroyed or sustained significant structural damage requiring extensive repairs. Homes that remain livable while repairs are made are not eligible for this particular financial assistance program. Red Cross disaster assistance is not a loan and does not need to be repaid.

Madison County residents whose primary residence was damaged by the August 11 flooding may now apply for up to $5000 in emergency aid through Indiana’s State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF).

The program may provide assistance for eligible uninsured losses, including certain home repairs, essential furnishings and appliances, essential tools, debris removal, medical devices, and essential transportation.

Applications are reviewed individually, and additional documentation may be required.

APPLICATION UPDATE: Applications are now being reviewed. Preliminary eligibility determinations are beginning this week, and potentially eligible applicants will be contacted directly for documentation needed to process payment.

City of Anderson Emergency Flood Assistance

The City of Anderson has launched an emergency flood assistance program providing $1,000 in direct assistance to eligible Anderson households located in or adjacent to the flood-impacted area.

The damaged property must be the applicant’s primary residence. Homeowners and renters may be eligible; businesses are not included in this program.

The program is now accepting applications.

Residents may apply in person Monday–Friday, 8 a.m.–4:30 p.m., at Anderson City Hall, Room 105. City representatives are also conducting door-to-door outreach in affected neighborhoods.

For assistance with the application, call 765-648-6159. Leave your name, phone number and affected address. The City says someone will return your call within 24–48 hours.

Eligible Indiana homeowners and renters impacted by the August storms may apply for up to $1,000 in housing-related assistance through the REALTORS® Relief Foundation and MIBOR REALTOR® Association.

Assistance may be used toward a mortgage payment for a disaster-damaged primary residence, rental costs resulting from displacement, or hotel expenses resulting from displacement.

Funding is available first-come, first-served until funds are exhausted or November 11, 2026. Complete applications are generally expected to be processed within three to five business days.

For properties affected by flooding, the City has announced temporary relief measures including:

• Waived flood-related permit fees

• Suspended electric and water disconnections for non-payment in flood-affected areas and waived reconnection fees for affected properties

• Free CATS and Nifty-Lift transportation

Madison County residents whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of the August 11 disaster may be eligible for federal Disaster Unemployment Assistance.

Applicants must first file for regular Indiana unemployment insurance. Individuals who are not eligible for regular unemployment may then apply for Disaster Unemployment Assistance if they meet the disaster-related eligibility requirements.

Application deadline: October 27, 2026.

HUD has announced federal disaster protections for homeowners affected by the August disaster, including a 90-day foreclosure moratorium for FHA-insured mortgages in federally declared disaster areas.

Homeowners with an FHA-insured mortgage who are having difficulty making mortgage payments because of the disaster should contact their mortgage servicer to discuss available disaster-relief options.

Anderson Housing Authority has not received temporary, emergency or disaster housing vouchers for flood victims. Residents who are already participating in AHA programs and whose housing was affected by the flooding should contact AHA regarding assistance available through their existing program.

Mercy Road Church Anderson established the Anderson Flood Relief Fund to help individuals and families affected by the August 2026 flooding in Anderson and Madison County.

Current direct-assistance focus is short-term lodging for households that cannot safely stay in their homes. The church is also tracking other recurring flood-recovery needs to identify unmet gaps, share helpful resources, coordinate with organizations equipped to respond, and determine whether our focus should change as the recovery progresses. 

Applicants may be asked to provide documentation showing how they were affected. You do not need to attend Mercy Road Church or have a religious affiliation to receive assistance.

Madison County residents are reminded that repairs or reconstruction to flood-damaged structures located in a floodplain may require a local building permit from Madison County or the planning/building department of the community where the property is located.

Depending on the location of the property, an additional permit from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources may also be required before reconstruction begins.

Interested households must contact the company directly to confirm availability, rent, qualifications, and lease terms. MCCF is not the landlord, does not determine eligibility, and is not a party to the lease.

Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA) is providing temporary housing assistance for eligible households displaced by the August flooding whose homes are currently unsafe or uninhabitable.

Eligible households may receive assistance with either:

• Temporary hotel accommodations for up to 30 days (no extensions), or

• Rental housing assistance

Households may receive only one of these options. Payments are made directly to participating hotels or landlords.

This may be especially helpful for flood-displaced households seeking a rental while using State Temporary Housing Assistance.
