Flood Relief in Madison County

Your generosity provided significant relief amidst historic flooding in Madison County.

This August, historic flooding hit our community, and local organizations didn’t wait for help to arrive. They opened their doors, served meals, distributed essential supplies, and gave displaced residents a place to stay. Thanks to the generosity of our local community, the Madison County Community Foundation was able to provide $40,000 in emergency grants to local nonprofits, helping them meet the urgent needs of their neighbors during a difficult time.

The grants went to Rangeline Community Center, Firefly Children and Family Alliance – Madison County Family Resource Center, Mercy Table, The Christian Center, Operation Love Ministries, and The Salvation Army of Anderson.

The grants to the six frontline organizations were intended primarily to help replenish resources and address costs created or intensified by the flood response. For some, that meant replacing food, cleaning supplies, hygiene products, clothing, and other necessities distributed to families. For others, the impact had extended to their buildings and equipment.

Rangeline Community Center quickly transformed its facility into emergency shelter space for displaced residents and provided housing for individuals affected by the flooding, while also navigating facility and plumbing issues of its own.

The Salvation Army of Anderson operated around the clock for approximately a week during the height of the emergency response, providing shelter, meals and other assistance to residents forced from their homes.

At the Christian Center, increased demand placed significant strain on the laundry facilities at the Eleos Center, where showers, laundry and other basic-needs services were available to those affected by the flood. Multiple dryers stopped working during the response, leaving only one operational.Grant funding will help replace the damaged equipment so those services can continue.

Mercy Table responded immediately after the flooding and became a central point for receiving, sorting, storing, and distributing remaining donations, including approximately 1,800 pounds of clothing, household goods, diapers, bedding, shoes, bottled water, and other essential supplies.

Firefly’s Madison County Family Resource Center, Mercy Table, and Operation Love Ministries have also helped families access food, household necessities, hygiene and cleaning supplies, clothing, resource connections, and other essential support throughout the response.

This is one of the reasons unrestricted generosity is so important. When something unexpected happens in our community, flexible charitable resources allow us to respond to what is needed right now. The generosity of donors who have entrusted unrestricted dollars to the Foundation, combined with collaborative grantmaking alongside community partners and resources made possible through Lilly Endowment Inc., strengthens our ability to respond when Madison County needs it most.
