Alexandria Main Street
Your generosity lit up downtown Alexandria with color, creativity, camaraderie, and community pride.
Alexandria was buzzing with excitement and expression during the SPARK Festival in October 2024. The festival, Spreading Public Art to Revitalize Knowledge, brought in guest artists to create murals as part of the Mural Trails project that spans across various communities in Madison County.
The mural project, which is part of a larger initiative to bring new life to downtown Alexandria, was supported by a grant from Madison County Community Foundation.
In addition to the murals, this often-overlooked stretch of town came alive with painted picnic tables, sidewalk chalk creations, and a kindness rock garden. Alexandria Main Street, Inc. sponsored the festival and is a nonprofit organization made up of community members who are committed to revitalizing the downtown Alexandria neighborhood.
Vice President, Amy McCurry said the project helped Alexandria take a long-awaited step forward. “There was so much apathy. These murals bring pride and a win for the community.” Alexandria Main Street, Inc. had ongoing conversations about bringing artwork to the buildings of downtown and they finally decided together, “The time is now!” - and took the steps to make it happen.
Thanks to gifts from MCCF and other organizations, Alexandria Main Street has the momentum to dream even bigger. Future murals are already in the works. The spark has been lit—and the community is rallying together. Want to get involved in the next chapter of Alexandria’s transformation?
