Founded by friends, family and loved ones to preserve the memory of Stephen Hamer, the Stephen Hamer Memorial Fund was established to recognize those graduating seniors in Madison County who have demonstrated a commitment to serve their community and embody the generosity, kindness, and selfless devotion that defined my brother’s life.
Stephen was an agent for social change in the community not through grandiose measures but rather by selflessly serving his fellow citizens with individual acts of kindness. He sought to serve the betterment of those around him, not for personal recognition or with a flamboyant style but rather to simply care for those in need. For example, it wasn’t until he was gone that we realized Stephen had been tutoring students after school and working with some disabled children without telling anyone. It’s that selfless spirit that we want to live on in our community.
His life, while tragically short, touched the lives of countless people and left an indelible mark on our community that we should all strive to transmit to others.
